A New Aunt Millie Bread

As often happens companies release new products. One of the goals at Achieve Weight Loss is to educate you so that you can make informed decisions when new or updated products are released.

One staple for many in the Achieve Weight Loss lifestyle are the breads created by the Aunt Millie’s bakery of Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Recently, they updated their products and added a new line of breads: Live™ Carb Smart.

The New Aunt Millie’s Live™ Carb Smart Line

These new breads are part of the Aunt Millie’s “Live” line. According to their website, the breads in this line include:

  • One net carb per slice
  • One gram of sugar per slice
  • Twice the fiber of most traditional breads

Like the other breads previously reviewed a couple of other features for these breads include:

  • No High Fructose Corn Syrup
  • Vegan

Although the new Live™ Light! have not be evaluated, the former “light” line of Aunt Millie’s breads typically rate as a B+ on the Fooducate.com website

Defining Fibrous Carb Breads

As a general rule, breads which are 50 calories or less often qualify as a Fibrous Carb in the Achieve Weight Loss lifestyle. Furthermore, Fibrous Carb vegetables and bread products are 1) Low in calories and 2) High in fiber. Thus, the best Fibrous Carb breads contain at least 1 gram of fiber+protein for every 10 calories. In other words, if a bread slice has 40 calories, we prefer it have a least 4 grams of fiber+protein. Even better is if the bread has 1 gram of fiber for every 10 calories.

The following is a review of the breads in the Live™ Carb Smart:

How do they do it?

After water, generally, the first ingredient in bread is flour, but in these breads the ingredient is resistant tapioca starch. According to the John Hopkins Patient’s Guide to Diabetes , resistant starch does not digest in the small intestine like regular starch but instead it ferments in the large intestine. As a result, it does not raise blood sugar levels. It also has other benefits such as:

  • increasing the feeling of fullness
  • preventing constipation
  • decreasing cholesterol
  • loweing the risk of colon cancer

In case you are wondering if the fermentation of resistant starch in the large intestine will give you excess gas, don’t worry because it will not due to the fact that it ferments slower than other fibers.

Comparing Live™ Carb Smart and Live™ Light

The breads in the Live™ Carb Smart are better for a few reasons:

  • lower in calories
  • higher in fiber
  • lower in total carbohydrates
  • lower in sodium

On the other hand, compared to the Live™ Light breads they are:

  • one gram higher in fat
  • do not have protein (or at least none is listed on their labels)

    Conclusion

Both types of bread in the “Live” line work fine as a Fibrous Carb; however, if you want an extra edge, the Live™ Carb Smart are the better option.
