Do the Healthy Life Keto Buns Work?

DO THE NEW LEWIS BAKERY HEALTHY LIFE KETO BUNS WORK?

Companies often release new products. One of the goals at Achieve Weight Loss is to educate you so that you can make informed decisions when new or updated products are released.

One staple for many in the Achieve Weight Loss lifestyle are the “Healthy Life” breads created by the Lewis Bakery.

The New Healthy Life Keto Line

The big number on the front of the package is “1 Net Carb Per Bun”.

Keto products typically are 1) low net carb, and 2) high in fat. Net carbs are determined by the following formula:

  • Total Carbs
  • (-) Fiber
  • (-) Sugar Alcohol

Fiber, particularly insoluble fiber, moves slowly through the digestive system and is not digested. As a result, insoluble fiber does not cause a rise in insulin. Furthermore, insoluble fiber causes your body to work harder as it tries to digest it (which it cannot) resulting in a higher thermic effect.

Like insoluble fiber, most sugar alcohols are also not digested thus causing a minimal increase in insulin. Sugar alcohols general have an “itol” ending and include: mannitol, sorbitol, xylitol, etc. However, it should be noted that sugar alcohols may cause a laxative effect in some people. In the case of bread products, you are highly unlikely to see sugar alcohols since they are often used to sweeten products.

The Healthy Life Keto Buns boast containing only “1 Net Carb.” If you look on the label you will see the following:

  • Total Carbs: 20g
  • (-) Fiber:17g

If you do the math, the bread has 3 Net Carbs! How do they get 1 net carb?

These breads use Allulose. Although not a sugar alcohol, the body reacts to Allulose as if it were a sugar alcohol. In other words, it is not metabolized and therefore does not cause a rise in blood sugar levels. Allulose is a monosaccharide and is naturally found in small amounts in a few foods—including figs, raisins, molasses, and maple syrup. Allulose makes up the additional 2 carbs which are subtracted from the total carbs. So the 1 net carb is arrived at by the following:

  • Total Carbs: 20g
  • (-) Fiber:17g
  • (-) Allulose: 2g

Classification

As a general rule, buns, muffins, and tortillas which are 110 calories or less often qualify as a Fibrous Carb in the Achieve Weight Loss lifestyle. Furthermore, Fibrous Carb vegetables and bread products are 1) Low in calories and 2) High in fiber. Thus, the best Fibrous Carb bread products contain at least 1 gram of fiber+protein for every 10 calories. In other words, if a bun has 100 calories, we prefer it have a least 10 grams of fiber+protein. Even better is if the bun, muffin or tortilla has 1 gram of fiber for every 10 calories.

The Healthy Life Keto Buns have 70 calories per bun. Thus, we’d like at least 7 grams of fiber+protein or, even better, 7 grams of fiber. In this case the buns have a whopping 17 grams of fiber alone in addition to the 11 grams of protein! Therefore, these breads meet the formula as a Fibrous Carb product.

Portion

The correct portion size would be one bun per meal.

Comparison

The Lewis Baker does have another bun: The 80 Calorie Wheat Sandwich Buns. Here is a side by side comparison:

Although the 80 calorie wheat buns are classified as a FC, the keto buns have some significant advantages and would be our top choice.

Have a Healthy Day,
