Why People Regain Weight Loss

A 1959 study suggested that maintaining weight loss is almost impossible for most people [1]; however, recent research has shown that up to 20% of those who lost 10% or more of their body weight are able to keep it off for more than one year. [2] Personally, I have maintained a Healthy BMI for almost a decade after losing 35 pounds. I still wear the same size clothes I did after I lost my weight in 2011. So, I know that weight loss can be maintained way beyond year; it can be maintained the rest of one’s life!

Here are some reasons why we regain weight:

  • The excitement of weight loss is over
  • When you are losing weight you are motivated to keep losing weight, however, once you have reached your goal, it is easy to become complacent.

  • Lack of accountability
  • When you started your journey, you welcomed feedback from your coach and may have been involved in the weight loss community. After you lose your weight, you begin to think that you don’t need the support or encouragement. Without the accountability and support you begin to have more Junk Days than you need.

  • Thinking you can “cheat” more
  • Once you lose your weight, it is tempting to think that you can have more than two Junk Days a week. I used to think this way, but the reality is that you need to keep to no more than two Junk Days a week.

  • Cheating more at restaurants
  • On the Achieve Weight Loss lifestyle you are allowed two Junk Days a week. It is best to plan your eating out for these days. When you lose your weight, it is tempting to think that you can get away with junking it more at restaurants. After all, what is the big deal about a helping of fries on a Healthy Day, right?

  • Boredom
  • You become bored with the way you ate to lose weight so you revert back to old habits. This is why accountability and online coaching helps.
