Weight Lost

How much weight have you lost so far?

I’ve lost 160lbs.

Basic History

Tell us about yourself.

I was an IT director for a large church and school for 16 years. I finally decided that I need to retire early and take care of my elderly parents and my son, who has some challenges, and so I’ve been doing that for quite some time.

How long have you been retired?

It’s been about three years now.

I know that since you’ve been retired you’ve had some challenges.

Yes, my father passed away last year in January and I continue to be with my mother and my son.

Previous Weight Loss Experience

Had you done weight loss before?

Oh my goodness, I did Jenny Craig, calorie counting, Atkins, pills, Weight Watchers, Nutri System, gastric bypass but nothing worked. I never understood what I was doing wrong and that made me regain the weight every time I’d have a loss of maybe 50 pounds; then I’d be right back where I started.

I was at work and I noticed a couple people losing weight  and my boss starting looking really thin and I though “I think he is sick”. I didn’t want to ask him if he was sick so I complimented him. He told me about this Achieve Weight Loss he had been going to. I was at a point in my life when I was heavy, I was extremely heavy. I was at a point in my life when I thought I was going to be in a wheelchair,  at the very least, or I was going to die.

So I decided to take the leap and try the class–what do I have to lose. So I tried the class and I gained some hope in that meeting and it sparked enough hope where I decided to take that chance. It was probably one the best decisions I have ever made in my life.

Was this post-bariatric surgery?

Yes. I was 338 pounds at that time.

So, you had lost hope; you had tried everything else. You went to the first Achieve Weight Loss class and what gave you hope?

Well, because I listened and I heard things I hadn’t heard before from your teaching. I heard that is wasn’t a diet it was a lifestyle and how I could live the rest of my life and be sustainable. I learned how I could enjoy food, but that it wouldn’t overtake my life; I was never taught that way before.

Benefits of Weight Loss on Achieve

Before you lost your weight, were you on medication?.

Absolutely, I no long take blood pressure medications or cholesterol medication. I take a few supplements as a preventative. It is great not being on those drugs.

I am convinced that alot of the struggles many people have is tied back to their weight.

Absolutely! Food can be a “poison”. The only medication I take now for hyperthyroidism, If you have hyperthyroidism you are going to be on the medication for that for the rest of your life.

That brings up an interesting thing because I have people who say they can’t lose weight because they have hyperthyroidism or PCOS, etc. Did you have hyperthyroidism when you started your weight loss journey with Achieve Weight Loss?

Yes, I did.

So, you lost your weight with hyperthyroidism.

Absolutely. I just want people to know you can do it. It is easy. It is not that people want to be heavy. I can tell you without a shadow of doubt that I am treated differently than I was when I was heavy. I have gained a lot of respect for people who are heavy.  My heart goes out to those people and I want to say “You don’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to lose it perfect. I have taken years to do it, but I glad I did it because I feel like I can live this lifestyle.  I’m not jumping on the weight loss wagon; it has become a lifestyle.

Difference with Achieve

What was the difference for you between Achieve Weight Loss and other programs?

Again, it was the teaching. I was being taught step-by-step the different things you could do to help you to be sustainable.  I was understandable. The more you understand and the more you learn, the more success you can have. As they say “Knowledge is the way you can learn and be successful.”

What happened the first week when you got on the scales? Were you shocked?

The first week, I was like “I’ll be glad if I lost a pound”, but it was a really nice lose. When you are very, very large those losses at first are very large. The more you lose the smaller the losses become, but once they become consistent; it is a payoff. You know it is not always going to be perfect, and that’s life, right, but yet it pays off.

I know you had a great influence on others. Your brother lost over 100 lbs and his wife lost over 50 lbs at Achieve Weight Loss. I know that your son lost also lost 50lbs at Achieve Weight Loss. When we lose weight we influence people because they are watching us.

Words of Counsel

What would be your counsel to someone who is thinking “I don’t know if I can lose the weight.” What would be your advice to someone who is struggling?

I hope and pray everyday that I would not go back to my old ways. I look at that now and I have to look at it as how will that affect my life. I envision my old way of eating as eating poison and that helps me be motivated. As a Christian, I want my body to be a glory to God. In that it gives me encouragement to strive and to be that witness. What I would say to anyone is “What do you have to lose. Go to a class. Give it a month, tow months. Ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask a question twice or three times. If it not soaking in, then keep asking questions.  Allow other people to help you be accountable. Think about it, what do you have to lose? What you have to lose is a lot weight and what you will gain is a lifestyle and a joy that you haven’t felt for a long, long time.

Navigating Difficulties

You’ve been living this for a while and you have had some difficult times in your life. How have you navigated the difficult times.

Yes, none of us is perfect and we fall short in a lot of different ways. What I have received is that it is a okay to have a mistake or a Junk Day, but you have to get back on. You can’t beat yourself up over it. You can’t be all doom and gloom. Get positive, go forward and for the next good thing.

Living the Achieve Lifestyle 

Do you enjoy your Healthy Days?

Absolutely. I have people tell me all the time that I look at least 20 years younger than I am! that is pretty exciting. I feel 40 years younger. I haven’t felt this good in, I honestly can’t tell you. Energy. I wish know I had been able to do this years ago, but now I have that opportunity to make the best of it and enjoy life.

Achieve Weight Loss gives you the basics. So, if you fall off, you can get back on. You can say “Okay so I made a mistake, but I’ll jump back to the basics.” My basic are there and I don’t have to worry about that.
